Academy 60 – BHSFP 9
Saturday’s fixture brought two local rivals together who had been experiencing success at opposite ends of the spectrum – Academy 7 wins from 7, BHS still to register a win. However, these games have a bit of the cup tie about them given the local rivalry, so anything was possible?
We had the usual suspects in attendance, including the great and the good from pre-match lunch. Adrian was there too!!! Academy were unchanged from last week’s trip to Coleraine and went into the game with nothing other than a win in mind. We started in the best way, scoring on 2 minutes when Normski skinned his man, was stopped on the BHS 10m line, the ball was recycled and moved to the other wing for Jedens to race in: 7 – 0, Coop converting. We got a bit lazy after this, conceding the first of numerous penalties at the ruck – 11mins: 7 -3. The game trundled on, until on 17mins, we finally got to grips and pressed BHS into their 22 for a sustained period, and on 19mins we made the BHS scrum creak, got the put in to the scrum and cut loose with Hendy bludgeoning a way through the last line of defence to feed a thundering Gurt from 6inches! 14 -3, Coop converted. Our effort dropped a little and by 26mins BHS had another penalty to make the score: 14 – 6. which we matched: 17 – 6. On 31 mins Normski countered from a loose clearance kick, stretching their defence to the point were Knoxy had a dart from a ruck to feed Coop to score: 24 – 6, another Coop conversion. One more penalty to BHS before half time saw the half close 24 – 9.
Coach McKee had a right pop at the lads for going “through the motions” – what would be the response?
43 mins Coop kicked another penalty: 27 – 9. However, BHS kept at it and we slackened our effort somewhat, so that by 53 mins there was no further score, but Jedens put an end to that, with a searing break from 40m out – his pace and power was just too much for BHS: 34 – 9, Coop did it again. Still BHS fought manfully, and the dam didn’t give way until 67 mins:
• 67mins – JK from 30m: 41 – 9
• 70mins – Hubby after great interplay by Jedens, Coop, Gurt: 46 - 9
• 73mins – Normski special: 53 - 9
• 74mins - Normski special: 60 - 9
The ref decided “no mas” and closed the game off on 75mins.
The wagon stays on course……Dec 5th at Lisburn…..See you there!!
